In his 1957 article, “On the Statistics of Individual Variations of Productivity in Research Laboratories, William Shockley, the 1956 winner of the Nobel Prize in physics, identified several "interacting mental factors of several different kinds” that are necessary and sufficient for researchers to produce scientific articles. But in this substack I will both argue that these inputs are, for many of us, hidden, essential and drivers of the “perishing” part of the “publish or perish” mantra. And to make matters worse, these “hidden inputs” are typically not taught in school. To address these inequalities and provide access to these hidden inputs, my platform, Mixtape Sessions, offers affordable workshops on various topics for diverse audiences in academia and beyond.
