I really enjoyed writing this. The title is corny, but I think it actually hits the point exactly. This is basically about what I think maybe of as core problems in causal inference related to sorting on treatment gains. It’s been on my mind building for a long time, but because it’s kind of my own thoughts about basic economics and my own interpretation of the “Roy model”, I sometimes wonder if it’s so overwhelmingly obvious that it won’t be interesting. It’s much easier to discuss Guido Imbens’ work, because I always know it’s original and interesting, than to discuss my own opinions, which seem almost certainly wrong or obvious. But, I hope you enjoy this. I spent Covid researching psychedelic medication and legal reforms, and was glad to finally have a chance to write all this down if for no other reason than I enjoyed telling the story.
