Wishing you and your family peace. Looking back, one of the most meaningful and memorable times I spent with my mother was taking her on her last trip to visit my sister on a ranch where she and her wife breed horses. It is where I learned to be present and in the moment. I have a picture of my mom and me near goat rock beach and at Jack London State Park that I look at and remember...

Thanks Tim — I’m super pumped about it. Gotta get this truck picked up from the mechanic then to Best Buy to get a decent stereo.

Praying for you, friend. Also, you’re still driving that Volvo?!!!?!?

No that poor old man died. Brakes fell out right as I pulled into the driveway, which I took as a sign.

I got an even older one now - 1991 240 wagon. When people get in, I point to the AC that wheezes out barely puffs of cool air and tell them “they don’t make them like this anymore”.

I’ll always own old Volvos from now on though. I’ll go older and older I suspect too. I’m torn between putting in my will to have my ashes poured on the Medina River or to have my body laid out seated in the driver seat in whichever Volvo I last owned and left somewhere in texas.

My dad’s experience with Parkinson’s was very similar. He didn’t have tremors and most of the issues were mobility related (freezing up) and mental and psychological challenges (hallucinations, misremembering things, forgetfulness but also remember specific details of events that had happened decades ago). Mood swings and anger were also common and out of character for my dad (he never got upset or raised his voice to us but did so frequently in those final months). It’s good that your family is getting support!

Thank you for your post and hoping this great (long!) trip is restorative. Note that Highway 1 is closed north of Big Sur to Carmel. Don't get on it too far south or you'll have to double back to 101. Death Valley is awesome; you'll want a taste and then go back again. Be sure to check out Arcata and Trinidad (south of the Redwoods).
